Esmé Patterson is releasing her second video off the album for the song “The Swimmer,” shot by filmmaker Isaac Ravishankara at the Seattle Aquarium. Says Ravishankara about the video:
“Of course there is the obvious connection of the name ‘Swimmer’ and the lyrics regarding fish and the sea to the setting in which we shot. But to me, the context was much more about the tone of the environment matching Esme’s emotions in her subdued performance of the song. And in an aquarium, unlike our normal human interaction with sea creatures, there is a magical way in which the display juxtaposes swimming and flying in a way that reminded me of the song’s lyrics. From the shots of the sea lion, to the jelly fish, to the large school of static fish, and especially that ‘nest’ of fish over her head – I had the feeling we were finding something honest.”
The first video from All Princes I for “My Young Man,” was shot along the foothills and between and above the peaks of the Colorado Rocky Mountains by Colorado filmmaker/photographer Rett Rogers. Parts of the video were shot in a hot air balloon, and the video has a fittingly ethereal, floating quality.
Patterson is currently on an extensive national tour with the band she is a founding member of, Paper Bird. Paper Bird just released a single, “As I Am,” off their new album Rooms. Both Paper Bird and Patterson’s solo work were recently featured in the New York Times as part of a piece on the Lumineers and the vibrant Denver music scene. She will be making several appearances at this year’s SXSW and is available for interviews; check her out at the SXSW parties below:
